Leaders with Good Coaching Skills Are Scarce, Finds New Study

There is a dangerous scarcity of leaders with good coaching skills, according to new research conducted by HR.com in partnership with professional services firm, InsideOut Development.

The study found that only about a fifth of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that managers in their organizations demonstrate behaviors that make a good coach. This scarcity occurs at a time when 94% of study participants said that manager-led coaching has either remained important or grown more important over the past year.

“Most people say that leader-led coaching will become even more of an imperative in 2018,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “The research indicates that good coaching leads to higher engagement and productivity levels, so developing leaders as coaches is an area where organizations need to quickly step up their game.”

The study also found that leaders who are good coaches give employees the sense that they are “being heard,” creating opportunities for two-way feedback. These leaders also excel at providing clear direction.

The most widely cited coaching weakness of leaders is their inability to have difficult but necessary conversations with employees. Even leaders who are otherwise good coaches tend to struggle here.

Now available for download, the research report, “Coaching as a Management Must”, is based on responses from 649 HR professionals and was published in November 2017. It contains informative statistics valuable to implement coaching in an organization.
