Today’s work is increasingly project-focused. As a result, organizations are adopting new talent management practices that shape the people being trained and managed, according to research recently conducted by HR.com in partnership with Deltek.

The research revealed that 40% of today’s organizations engage in considerable project-focused hiring. That is, 6% or more of new employees are hired for projects or contracts. About a tenth of organizations surveyed are so project-focused that 40% or more of their new employees were hired for projects or contracts.
“We’re long past the era when huge numbers of people did exactly the same work day in and day out,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “In the information age, a ton of work gets done via projects. Many employees who aren’t part of the Gig Economy even tend to work like internal contractors, moving from one project to the next. Leaders have to adapt to this new way of getting work done.”
The study found, for example, that project-focused firms are more likely than other firms to:
– Use skills repositories to enable them to better match talent with projects
– Assign greater importance to career advancement training
– Adopt project-based performance appraisals
– Rely on contingent employees
