Effectively Managing Corporate Culture is Critical for HR – According to New Study by HR.com’s Research Institute

The majority of human resources (HR) professionals (80%) believe culture is a critical issue for organizations. Unfortunately, only about one-third thinks their organization manages culture successfully or very successfully.

HR.com’s Research Institute conducted the study, State of Corporate Culture Survey 2018/2019, in partnership with Humantelligence, a leading provider of culture analytics and recruiting software. The research investigated the state of corporate culture as far as its prevalence and success in management and measurement in business.

HR’s perception that culture is a crucial matter in business is understandable considering the influence it has on a company’s success.  Culture can provide a consistent sense of purpose and exert strong influence over issues such as employee engagement, retention, and productivity. In addition, it shapes the employer brand, affects recruitment and retention, helps drive customer satisfaction, and influences relationships with suppliers.

Insights from the research highlight the efforts of those respondent organizations considered to be successful at managing their corporate culture. These companies are more likely than others to report that they:

  • have formally defined corporate culture
  • value diversity of thought among employees
  • measure a lot more and survey more frequently
  • have an understanding of their employee preferences and working styles
  • make everyone accountable for culture
  • track metrics related to culture to help guide candidate selections

Surprisingly, only one-quarter of HR professionals even measure overall corporate culture. In addition, just one-fifth have a budget related to corporate culture. These results turn the spotlight to management to create a top-down approach to focus more on creating a strong culture.

“Managers and HR professionals recognize that a positive corporate culture is the key to attracting and retaining top talent, but few realize there is much work to be done,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Companies need to dedicate resources to educate employees on how to track key metrics around  culture-based performance issues and manage culture successfully.”
