Canadian Healthcare Network Improves Employee Engagement and Morale

GUELPH, Ontario — April 27 , 2010 — Healthcare organizations across North America face daunting challenges of having to do more with less, while not compromising the quality of patient care. In a progressive move, Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) of Canada wanted to support its employees by improving effective communication practices and reducing their stress.

In an effort to remove interferences and make it easier for staff to get things done, HPHA engaged Juice Inc., a company specializing in helping organizations improve communication, collaboration and performance. HPHA’s employee satisfaction scores improved in all key corporate indicators within 18 months of their work with Juice. In working with Juice, Andrew Williams, HPHA chief executive officer, found that he had a strong connection with Juice’s basic philosophy that an organization’s success is driven by the quality of its conversations.

“The message from Juice was loud and clear—it’s all about conversation,” said Williams. “If you want to improve processes and work flow, if you want to remove friction and minimize personal conflict, if you want to ensure that every member of the team is fully engaged with their work, you have to nurture high-quality conversations at every level of the organization.”

HPHA and Juice launched an intensive employee training program, beginning with sessions for managers that would foster improvements in HPHA’s communication. Training also focused on how to coach people to deliver their best performance and how to improve the performance review process itself. Staff members attended the training next, concentrating on their vital role in improving communication with supervisors and each other.

Juice focused the training program on role playing exercises, visualization techniques and other tools to help the HPHA team identify the specific areas where communication was breaking down. The training helped the team improve coaching and mentoring its direct reports, constructively confronting and resolving personal problems, supporting one another’s daily tasks and challenges, and sharing work more fairly.

“It’s our belief at Juice that an organization’s employees deserve to have energy left at the end of the work day to devote to their families and their own well-being,” said Juice co-founder Brady Wilson. “HPHA’s senior team wholeheartedly supported this philosophy from the start. In fact, that’s why they engaged Juice.”

Juice’s work has lead to improved interpersonal conversations, work processes, communication and mutual respect among teammates at HPHA. To learn more about HPHA’s implementation of the Juice methodologies, visit http://www.juiceinc.com/casestudy_huron.htm.
