Great Place to Work(R) and Fortune Announce the 2016 World's Best Multinational Workplaces

October 26, 2016 (San Francisco) – The world is making progress toward great workplaces for all.

The best workplaces are getting better around the globe, and the number of great, high-trust workplaces has nearly doubled since 2011.

That’s the big takeaway as consulting firm Great Place to Work(R) and Fortune announce the sixth annual list of the 25 World’s Best Multinational Workplaces (http://reviews.greatplacetowork.com/2016-worlds-best-list). In conjunction with the list, Great Place to Work(R) is publishing a report highlighting the momentum toward great workplaces across the globe.

Technology giant Google ranks No. 1 on the list for the fourth straight year. Rounding out the top five are software firm SAS Institute, specialty manufacturer W.L. Gore & Associates, information technology company Dell EMC (formerly EMC Corp.), and Daimler Financial Services.

“The near-doubling of workplaces globally that meet our standards is an encouraging sign that the Great Place to Work For ALL movement (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/now-time-build-great-workplace-all-michael-c-bush?trk=mp-reader-card) is catching on around the world,” said Kim Peters, Executive Vice President of Great Place to Work(R). “Regardless of where they’re located or what they offer, more and more organizations realize that high-trust workplaces — where every employee’s potential is realized — are good for business and good for our global society.”

Around the world, employees at leading workplaces feel better and better about where they work. Scores on our Trust Index Employee Survey(C), which measures levels of trust, pride and camaraderie, have increased at the best workplaces in 22 of the 30 countries for which Great Place to Work(R) has data going back to 2010, as well as in the region of Central America and the Caribbean.

What’s more, the number of organizations around the world named as a Best Workplace or that have met our minimum standard of a great workplace has almost doubled since 2011. The figure that year was roughly 2,200 workplaces with a total of some 6.1 million employees. In 2016, the number of great workplaces has reached approximately 4,100, with an aggregate of about 6.9 million employees.

About the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces
Since 2011, Great Place to Work(R) has identified the top organizations that create great workplaces in multiple countries in which they operate through the publication of the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces list. To be considered eligible for the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces list, companies must meet our definition of a Multinational Company and appear on a minimum of 5 national best workplaces lists that rank organizations based on the results of their Trust Index(C) employee survey and Culture Audit(C) assessment (to qualify in the United States, we look at winners of the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For(R) list). The results of those national lists, in addition to extra points awarded for the number of countries an organization surveyed employees in, and the percentage of the company’s global workforce represented by those surveys, are combined to create a top 25 ranking.
Candidates for the list must have a minimum of 5,000 employees worldwide, and 40% of their workforce (or 5,000 employees) must be based outside of the country in which they are headquartered. Candidates for the 2016 World’s Best Multinational Workplaces list will have appeared on national workplaces lists published in September 2015 through August 2016.
