EDISON, New Jersey / March 13, 2012—Experts in policy, economics and entrepreneurship will kick off the sixth annual HRO Today Forum in Washington, D.C., April 30-May 2, with an opening keynote panel, “Where Do Jobs Come From: The Birds & Bees of Labor Flows & Job Creation.”
Job creation is the Forum’s key theme this year: how jobs get made, who creates jobs, how to grow more of them, and how HR can help. HR doesn’t “create jobs” per se, but it can play a key role in workforce design and talent acquisition. The distinguished panel of Brink Lindsey, Scott Case and John Haltiwanger, each of whom has consulted on bi-partisan legislation to promote business and job growth, will discuss how jobs are actually created in the global economy. They’ll share some surprising findings that point to a special job-creating role on the part of start-ups — and on the part of bigger businesses that create pools of talent around them that foster innovation and start-ups.

Brink Lindsey is a senior scholar in Research and Policy for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, where he uses his expertise in international trade, immigration, globalization, and economic development to identify the structural reforms needed to revive entrepreneurial innovation, firm formation, and job creation in the wake of the Great Recession. Lindsey joined the Kauffman Foundation from the Cato Institute, where he served as vice president for research. From 1998 to 2004, he was director of Cato’s Center for Trade Policy Studies, helping to make it a leading voice for free trade.
Scott Case is a technologist, entrepreneur and inventor and was founding chief technology officer of Priceline, the “Name Your Own Price” company that was one of only a handful of startups in U.S. history to reach a billion dollars in annual sales in less than 24 months. He was responsible for building the technology that enabled Priceline’s hyper-growth. Case is the chief executive officer and a board member of the Startup America Partnership, where he works to drive American entrepreneurship to create jobs and sustain the nation’s global leadership. Previously, Scott helped build a portfolio of intellectual property at the Walker Digital Invention Laboratory, and is a named inventor on dozens of U.S. patents including the underlying portfolio for Priceline.
John C. Haltiwanger, is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland. In the late 1990s, he served as Chief Economist of the U.S. Census Bureau. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Studies at the U.S. Census Bureau. He has played a major role in developing and studying U.S. longitudinal firm-level data. Using these data, he has developed new statistical measures and analyzed the determinants of firm-level job creation, job destruction and economic performance. He has published more than 90 academic articles and numerous books including “Job Creation and Destruction,” co-authored with Steven Davis and Scott Schuh.
