More Successful Job Seekers Rely on Networking

PHILADEPHIA, PA — March 16, 2010 — The recession has prompted an abrupt rise in the use of networking to find new employment, according to a study of successful job seekers by Right Management. The firm analyzed data on more than 43,000 individuals to whom it provided career transition services during 2008 and 2009. Right Management is the talent and career management expert within Manpower, the global leader in employment services.

In 2009 networking was the source of new employment for 45% of job candidates, up from 41% in the prior year.

“Career experts have long known that networking is the best way to find suitable employment,” said George P. Herrmann, Executive Vice President for the Americas at Right Management. “And there are hiring opportunities out there. Manpower’s Q2 2010 Employment Outlook Survey found that 16% of U.S. employers anticipate increasing staffing levels in the second quarter. And 12 of the 13 industries studied report positive Net Employment Outlooks, meaning employers in most industries plan to add staff.”

According to Herrmann, the networking trend reflects the impact of the recession, but is also driven by the growing role of social networking. “Online networking sites greatly expand the reach of classic person-to-person networking. More people may be reached and old friends and acquaintances found. All professionals, whether in career transition or fully employed, now have to regard online networks as an essential component of their overall career management and development.”

Other means of job finding methods remain proportionately the same as in years past. The Internet continues to outpace recruiters and agencies, while responding to employment ads remains flat.

“What the findings suggest is that people trust people,” Herrmann explained. “Networking is at least twice as successful for landing a new job as any other approach, and five times more effective than simply cold-calling a prospective employer.”
