Personalized Employee Learning Is Crucial Yet Still Widely Underused – New Research from HR.com

Three-quarters of HR professionals say personalized learning is important, but only about a fifth think their organizations are good at it, according to a new report released by HR.com.

The newly released research report, The Arrival of Personalized Learning, is based on an industry survey by HR.com in partnership with Adobe, maker of the learning management system Captivate Prime. The survey gathered responses from 449 HR professionals.

“In most areas of our lives, the era of personalization has long since arrived, thanks to smart digital technologies. But when it comes to learning, it’s been a painfully slow journey,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “But I think that it’s going to pick up speed pretty quickly now.”

In fact, over three-fifths of HR professionals expect an increase in the amount of personalized learning over the next three years.

Study results indicate this is because of today’s tight labor market where employers crave skilled employees like never before. Most responding HR professionals (86%) said that addressing learners’ skill gaps is a critical feature of personalized learning. Another 74% reported that addressing the future aspirations of learners is key. Today, more organizations want to boost the career development capabilities of their systems.

As learning becomes more personalized, it also becomes more interactive. Sixty-four percent indicate interactive media is the most effective way to deliver personalized learning content, the top choice. Only 27% chose the written word as the most effective way.

The payoffs of personalized learning seem worth the effort. Eighty-five percent of HR professionals feel that personalized learning will lead to better learning engagement, and over four-fifths expect it will lead to better learning outcomes.
