Some Must Relocate to Find New Employment

Philadelphia, PA — March 5, 2010 — As many as 15% of mid- to senior-level job seekers who found new employment in 2009 had to relocate, according to a study of job candidates by Right Management. The firm analyzed data on 26,706 individuals throughout the United States to whom it provided outplacement services. Right Management is the talent and career management expert within Manpower, the global leader in employment services.

“Surprisingly, this trend has not changed much over recent years.” said Melvin Scales, Senior Vice President for Global Solutions at Right Management. “While job seekers were challenged with a tough employment market last year, it is reassuring that relocation choices actually turned out to be consistent with the data tracked prior to the recession.”

Percentage of US candidates who relocated in 2009:

Pacific 10%
Northeast 12%
Midwest 13%
Mid-Atlantic 13%
Southern 20%

As a rule, job seekers would accept a job requiring a move only if the offer is generous or the opportunity compelling, Scales observed. “So relocation is no reflection on any single market, but an indication of a candidate’s fit for a new position. Moreover, relocation is a fact of life and a key part of the flexibility and complexity of today’s workforce and the choices that individuals make.”

Scales advises individuals considering relocation to make sure their decision reflects their own goals and values. “Carefully determine what’s most important in your life. For some, relocating may not be desirable, but for others it may be a wonderful adventure. But if done for the wrong reasons relocation could be costly and disruptive — the opposite of what you were hoping to accomplish.”
