New Impact Achievement Group Survey Reveals Coaching Failures

SEATTLE/April 8, 2011— The majority of managers and supervisors in organizations today receive a failing grade in coaching, according to a new survey report from Impact Achievement Group.

The report, “Performance Coaching: The One-Size-Fits-All Dilemma,” is based on a survey in Q1 2011 of human resource and training professionals, managers and chief executive officers on the impact their managers were having on the engagement and discretionary effort of employees.

Among other findings, the report revealed that:

– 78% of managers and supervisors received failing grades for adapting their coaching style to meet the variety of performance situations they must deal with.
– 63% fail to intervene in a timely and effective manner when a direct report’s performance is not meeting acceptable standards or an individual’s performance has dropped below past levels.
– Only 5% of managers and supervisors give clear expectations, clear parameters of authority, and necessary guidance when delegating decision-making authority to employees.

The absence of effective coaching–whether it stems from lack of training or a reliance on personal coaching preferences—results in under-management. Managers and supervisors who default to “one size fits all” coaching risk losing engagement and discretionary effort as employees feel unheard and unsupported. This reduces productivity and increases turnover.

“The results of this study clearly point to an area of significant need in businesses throughout America,” said Lee Klepinger, president of Impact Achievement Group. “Aligning coaching style with the performance level of the employee is a key factor for driving excellent business results. Managers need to receive support in this critical role with training that prepares them for any performance situation.”
